Newlyn Copper Cigarette Box
We picked up this stunning, coastal themed box from a house in Coleraine a few weeks ago and what a find! Handmade between 1890 and 1920 when the fishing industry in Cornwall was deemed an unreliable source of income - many fishermen expanded their skill sets to other trades (such as copper work) and become 'makers' of trinkets. Newlyn is the largest fishing port in South West Cornwall and pieces from the the Art Metal Industry that emerged during the late 19th century are now widely collected and sought after. Lined in wood, stamped with 'Newlyn' (guaranteeing handmade throughout) and decorated with various types of fish - this is an incredibly unique piece that comes with quite the story!
